The Engaged Encounter weekend not only satisfi es diocesan requirements for marriage preparation, it provides an atmosphere for each couple to engage one another in their hopes, dreams, wishes and desires for their future lifelong marriage relationship. Each couple will have the opportunity to explore with one another their strengths and weaknesses, their goals and their attitudes toward family life, children, sexuality, fi nances, the church and their place in society.
Engaged Encounter is an opportunity of a lifetime in which couples preparing to get
married spend a weekend exploring, examining and deepening their relationship as a
couple with each other and with God. The format is as follows:
(1) a presentation is given by the team
(2) questions are given to each couple to answer privately
(3) time is given for each couple to get together and discuss privately thoughts or feelings on given topic.
Group discussion is very limited. The focus of the weekend is providing an environment in
which couples celebrate their strengths and acknowledge their challenges. Many times couples reaffi rm what they already know about one another or discover new ways to approach their relationship. The weekend will follow a natural fl ow from refl ecting on self, to their relationship as a couple, to the sacrament of matrimony, and to what God is calling them to be about in the world.
Although the Engaged Encounter experience is Christ-centered, the main focus is on
the development of the couple’s relationship and how they relate to others including their church community.
