Rite of Election
February 14, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
JACKSON – Bishop Jospeh Kopacz will celebrate the diocesan Rite of Election Sunday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. in the Cathedral of St. Peter the Apostle. The Rite of Election is the ritual reserved for the diocesan bishop where Catechumens (those who have not been baptized) declare themselves publicly before him and become members of the Elect. It is an ancient rite dating back to the early church. Bishop Kopacz invites and encourages all Catechumens to come to the cathedral and participate in the celebration, especially during this Jubilee Year of Mercy when special graces are offered for making a pilgrimage. Each Catechumen will sign the Book of the Elect in the presence of the bishop as a step to declare themselves through the witness of their godparents to be ready to journey toward full initiation into the Catholic faith at the Easter Vigil. Candidates (those who have been baptized in another Christian tradition) are encouraged to attend the Rite also as a sign of solidarity for the Catechumens. Bishop Kopacz will offer a special blessing for the candidates during the Rite.
